Looking through a stained glass window

March 6, 2007

Stained glass as an art always brings fascination and interest to the eye. Intricately done, the viewer is drawn to its beauty and could even gaze and contemplate on the details of a stained glass piece of art for a longer time. There is something about the different hues of glass being mixed into different shapes and sizes which make up the complete image.

Since the 10th or 11th century, stained glass developed as an art and was commonly used in cathedrals for decorative and informative purposes, but later graced the windows of houses in the Victorian era. Some contemporary buildings and houses, including the houses designed by the great architect Frank Lloyd Wright, also use stained glass windows to lend a more aesthetic appeal.

I discovered some really nice designs at ShopStainedGlassWindows.com, an online store with a wide selection of stained glass window panels. I was a bit overwhelmed with the range of designs and styles to choose from – all items can be browsed by different categories – by price, by shape/type (round, oval, square, etc.), by theme (floral, victorian, birds, religious, sports/recreation, scenic, plants, trees and many more designs), by height and by width.

The peacock stained glass design (image posted above) from the birds theme is one of my faves, also the Three Elements Of Nature and the Woodland Lily Pond window designs shown below.

FLWright commented once that stained glass in houses makes the mood of the interior and enhances the feel to being a “home” instead of it being just an ordinary brick edifice.

Curacha: ako rin, gusto ko ng ganyan sa dream house ko. :)

Skulgirltrx: interesting hobby… so you’re into arts and crafts as well? i’m curious about how you do it. thanks for the link!

Rey: Yup, a stained glass window can really add more beauty and appeal to the interior of a house esp. when light passes through it … so cool.

Looks great, sounds great, thank’s for sharing the information with the others. I found you while looking for molds on the net. You mention that you have some links for quality molds - would you mind sharing those? I was just trying to make a simple garden bench but now I think I’ll have to try your technique - beautiful! To start with, I’m going to give you the email contact to a good friend that makes and sells molds. You won’t find anything of better quality, and they have a very broad selection that you won’t find elsewhere. They’ve been working on a website, but it’s not published yet.
