The value of gold

June 17, 2010

Governments use gold to secure the paper notes they issue. That’s how precious gold is as a metal. Its value appreciates even while other things or properties depreciate with time. Take the value of cars, after short time of even days, once it gets out of the showroom, its price could go down by as much as fifty percent. Not gold. That’s why governments with small land area advise their citizens to buy gold coins as solid and valuable assets to possess, where they cannot own real property as land. Gold is naturally beautiful and pliable that’s why it is used for jewelry.

Switching from Nokia to Sony Ericsson, LG, Samsung and other phone brands

June 16, 2010

Are you a loyal Nokia mobile phone user? Have you tried using other phone brands and finding it just too difficult to navigate through their user interface? I’ve known of diehard Nokia phone users who are not ready yet to switch to another phone brand. With the coming of the latest smartphones in the market though, such as the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 and other phone brands, some Nokia users might be tempted to switch if they see some attractive features that are not available in their Nokia phone.

Most Nokia users who think they’d find it difficult to adjust to a different phone would find it a breeze to navigate through Sony Ericsson’s user-friendly menu and controls. Well, that’s actually based on my personal experience as I used to be a Nokia phone owner but I decided to try a different brand. Right now, my main mobile phone is a Sony Ericsson C510, a camphone with few additional features which I don’t even use that much. Nevertheless, after just few days of switching from a Nokia to a Sony Ericsson, I’ve no problem adjusting to its user interface.

Incorporating building design with landscape design

June 12, 2010

A well-designed residential building honors both beauty and function within its interiors as well as outside its walls. But the overall impression of a beautiful home includes its surrounding premises as well - the front and back yards, the lawn and gardens, the pool and other outside elements. This requires a lot of planning and it’s best to incorporate building design with landscape design to achieve such harmonious results. Thus, when it comes to landscaping, it’s not just the placing of trees or bushes somewhere in your yard. The overall design should be functional as well.

Finding the right college or university

June 11, 2010

To make the most of one’s career and income potential, getting a college or university degree is a must. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Current Population Survey, those with bachelor’s degrees earn about 60% more than high school graduates, while those with master’s degrees earn two times more. Getting a higher education does improve one’s academic qualifications and giving him/her an edge over other job applicants especially in today’s competitive world.

Quadrant II time management concept

It’s high time I should prioritize on using my precious time for much needed Quadrant II activities. The Quadrant II concept is taken from the time management matrix of Stephen Covey’s bestseller book “First Things First”.

The four quadrants of time management:
Q1 = urgent, important = quadrant of necessity
Q2 = not urgent, important = quadrant of quality and personal leadership
Q3 = urgent, not important = quadrant of deception
Q4 = not urgent, not important = quadrant of waste

The Quadrant II concept according to Covey is a time management concept of investing one’s time in life’s more important activities such as building relationships, planning ahead, doing regular exercise or activities that enrich one’s physical, social, mental and spiritual aspects. These are not urgent activities but they are the big rocks in life, and investing time in these endeavours would surely enrich one’s life in the long run.

Good books I have yet to finish reading

June 10, 2010

studyingWith my usual hectic schedule, I would sometimes feel sad whenever I see on my bedside table some books I’ve set aside to read. They were books I’ve read before that I want to reacquaint myself with. Yes, some books are just too good to be kept hidden and not given the chance to be read again.

Another one on my list of must-finish-reading-these-books is about an inspiring priest and his social work for AIDS victims and the less fortunate kids in the slums of Bangkok. This book was a gift last Christmas 2008 yet and until now I still haven’t read past the middle of it.

Anyway, I took time for few days to finish reading a book about effective writing. It took me a lot of resolve to squeeze some reading time in my schedule. I realized that once you’re determined to include reading as part of your daily timetable, it becomes a habit. So I’m thankful I’ve made it through the last page, though I had to go back to page one again just to review some of the author’s principles.

I have a busy timetable these days but I’m planning to include at least reading one book a week in my activities. Now, that would mean giving up a bit of Facebook and some trivial surfing on the web. ;)

Unstable value of currencies

June 6, 2010

Investors nowadays look around for solid investment, especially as the currencies are constantly changing. Money in the bank can easily be eaten up by inflation, and businesses are at high risk due to the instability of the financial situation, not only of a particular country, but of the world in general. This is why some businessmen are looking for reliable options on where to invest their funds.

Buying your meds online?

June 5, 2010

Online shopping has its pros and cons. Some may vow they will not anymore rely on the coated words of online merchants for their products, but the wiser others continue to enjoy this high-tech way of buying things without going out of their homes, and with the goods delivered right at their doorstep.

Pharmaceutical goods or drugs are on the net too, however, one has to be more cautious as sometimes this may mean the life of the patient if one is not careful enough. It’s surely advisable to be knowledgeable of the online pharmacy one deals with, rather than just rushing to purchase without investigating its reputation and track record. Remember we are dealing here with medicine which may cause the life of the patient if we are not careful in choosing the online pharmacy we deal with.

Making healthy choices

Here at home, we try to make healthy choices in our food and lifestyle. That means more veggies and fruits and less meat. My parents visit their physicians as scheduled during the year. Mom is taking maintenance medicines for her hypertension, while Dad has his own prescription medicines as well. We also take regular high dosages of Vitamin C in sodium ascorbate form as anti-stress and immune system booster. Aside from that, mom and I maintain our daily dose of Calcium with Vitamin D.

While choosing to live healthy is best, some families consider this a challenge as they find it financially difficult to set aside a budget for prescription medicines and food supplements. This is where generic medicines come in, to have affordable choices for those who have limited budget.

Business matters: Going after late-paying clients

June 4, 2010

When we still had our family business on computer training, we really don’t have difficulties asking for the bill from our clients for computer rental and services as they promptly pay at the cashier. There was one incident though when a user just left her personal item instead of paying in cash after using the computer for hours.

When it comes to our computer seminars however, we would find it a challenge to bill our clients especially those participants from government agencies as we had to go through so many offices and processes in order for the check to be finally ready for pick up. I also remember one participant who still hasn’t paid for his training and we got all sorts of alibis from him, we even had a hard time contacting him in his office.

Moving can be a stressful experience

When our family made a major move from Cebu to Negros, it was such a challenge for us. We had to sort out a lot of stuff considering we stayed for about 18 years in Cebu. You can just imagine all sorts of documents and things we have kept since college and when we had our computer training business.

I can just remember that particular night when the moving team came and the driver and his staff took out our sofa, cabinets, tables, chairs and other things and arranged it in the truck. Our apartment was such a mess that time, with all sorts of boxes and containers waiting to be loaded. Even with such a disorganized move, I’m thankful that we arrived in Negros, together with all our belongings, safe and sound.  I could say though that it was such a stressful experience for us.

Business relationships

When it comes to educational institutions including training or instructional schools, establishing good relationship with their clients is the key to running their business. There are some client situations though that are challenging to the management’s finances, such as outstanding bills and other financial obligations. This is where a third party team is needed to preserve the relationship between student and the institution.

With debt collection agencies such as American Profit Recovery (APR), the institution gets assistance on how to recover their finances while protecting their relationship with the clients. APR is confident of its familiarity and knowledge with educational institutions and they can help provide practical ways to reconcile outstanding debts.
