For fashion and investment

July 26, 2010

Silver is not only becoming popular as an attractive fashion accessory, but as a good investment product as well. For instance, governments steadily use gold and silver to secure the paper notes they are releasing. Since 1990, world demand for silver has been going up, exceeding annual production, to the point that even the United States Bureau has depleted its stockpile.

Letting go of old stuff

Isn’t it that we tend to accumulate stuff as the years progress? And it seems like we can’t seem to let go of even the most ancient of our belongings.

For instance, here at home, we have our old kitchen which now looks like a storage room with piles of boxes, tools, worn out furniture, broken appliances and so many junk lurking around. I’m just thankful that Dad cleaned up our garage coz it used to look so messy too with some piled up chairs needing repair. We also have an abandoned shed house in our front yard which is also full of our belongings. And when I look at some of the old things in my room, I am also tempted to just put them all in a bag and give them away.

But then again, you just don’t easily throw old stuff like you do with garbage. Organizing is a must and each item has to be evaluated, whether you can still recycle it, give it to somebody or ultimately throw it in the trash.

I guess the dilemma of deciding which stuff to let go and which to keep comes from our attachment to them, because through them, we keep the memories alive. But as time moves on, these treasured pieces of letters, souvenirs and mementos fade or worn, and we have no other choice but ultimately to let go and just let the memories live in our hearts.

Condo project: Bedroom wall-hung art

One of the things we needed for the condo’s bedroom wall is an art piece. The owner has limited budget so I ditched the idea of having another painting for the wall. Good thing I found some 3-in-1 art series at the mall which didn’t cost that much. There are many choices so we narrowed down our selection to three. Thankfully, the sales guys allowed me to snap pics of the items. I told them I need to take pics so I can show to the owner who’s abroad.

Here are the choices…

Art series 1

Art series 2

Art series 3

The client chose the second, Art series 2, which was also my first choice. Mom really liked the first art series though.

Beauty products and services

There are a lot of beauty products available in the market nowadays, one could get dizzy with all the choices. Just think about all sorts of products from head to toe and you would faint from having to decide which conditioner to use for your dry damaged hair or which foot soak product is the best for your feet. Anyway, it’s good for consumers to have lots of choices giving them what they really need.

When it comes to beauty products and services, my choice would always depend on quality at reasonable price. I don’t just go for a beauty product because of its brand name, but I would buy it if the quality is good. I do own some branded products that cost much but the price is really worth it. For me, it’s a sort of investment.

Earth-friendly initiatives

July 25, 2010

I’m always glad when there are initiatives geared towards environmental conservation and preservation. For instance, there’s SM’s MYOB (MY Own Bag) every Wednesday which encourages shoppers to bring their own shopping bags instead of having to rely on the store’s green plastic bags. There’s the Trash to Cash, a waste recycling market, every first Friday and Saturday of the month.

I was also impressed by Human Nature’s packaging for their products (see photo above) - recycled magazines instead of packing it with a plastic with their logo on it as most shops would do. When the Human Nature saleslady handed over the packaging, I was impressed.

I also remember my friend O who gave us gifts wrapped in old newspaper. I really thought it was cool and am thinking of following suit. Gift wrappers from recycled magazines and newspapers are just one of the many simple ways we can do to protect Mother Earth.

Confessions of a blogaholic

Acer travelmate

A blogaholic I am,
and a workaholic as well.
I love working late at night,
when the drowning noise outside ceases,
and unexpected distractions
leave me in peace,
when my mind and soul becomes alive,
focused on the task at hand,
when silence seems like a long time companion
and the clock becomes my unwanted hasty foe.

Cute bedroom slippers

These adorable black eyes staring at you are from the cutest bedroom slippers I’ve ever seen. These are just less than 5”, so it’s really that cute but it sure would be comfy for little feet with its towel-like material and anti-slip soles. My 5-year old nephew loves everything green so I bet he’d find this pair cute as well. Too bad it won’t fit him anymore. It looks more like a toy than something for the feet, yeah?

On wearing jewelry

July 24, 2010

Truly wearing jewelry depends on the woman herself, whether she likes to wear it, or just choose not to. I could say this as I’ve known a lady who doesn’t mind if she has no earrings. Though in rare special occasions, she does wear them, but it’s so seldom. She would like however to have bracelets, or doesn’t mind if she has a necklace in some special affairs. This only shows that wearing jewelry depends on the personality of the woman. And if you’re thinking of giving somebody a jewelry piece as gift, you have to know him/her better, to be able to rightly choose her preferred style.

So soon

I just received some sad news today about our community member who recently passed away. His wife broke the news to us this morning and up to now I still can’t believe it. Anyway, I’m sure he left his family in a good situation, as their house which was on sale was already bought and they transferred to another province just few weeks before he passed away.  With his wife and three kids left behind, it would sure be tough to cope with life’s challenges especially with finances.

Financing options

July 17, 2010

A family friend is recently experiencing a grave financial crisis. This started when her husband was pulled out of work due to a serious health problem which has forced them to even consider selling their house. An option however is to mortgage it, which they can save when the hubby will be back to work. In times like this, it’s important to shop around so as to compare rates. Other financing options such as loan programs and related factors to consider such as interest rates must also be compared and watched as they are constantly changing.

Bathroom fixtures and accessories

July 16, 2010

Finally we’re done with the inventory for one of the condo units, but it’s just too bad that the bathroom’s got some problems, it’s got to do with the water pipes I guess. Anyway, we already reported this with the project manager and he saw how too much pressure on the pipes caused some vibration and noise on the walls after the toilet is flushed. Maybe the installation of the pipes was not good enough. Ugh. Or is it because of the water closet or toilet? Maybe the brand used is not one of those high quality toilets?

A good investment option

moneyIn Hongkong, as in other places of small land areas, people are encouraged by the government to invest in gold and other precious metals, as they cannot easily invest in real estate with such limited geographical area.

Being a solid asset, gold is more stable than money in the bank, as the value of paper money can be eaten up fast by inflation throughout the years. Governments choose gold bullions to secure the paper notes they release.

Online community for pharmacy reviews

July 14, 2010
Microsoft clipartBeing part of an online community where you can share your ideas and opinions is a good thing, especially when it comes to shopping and consumer-related issues. Reading product reviews from fellow consumers is a great learning experience.

It really helps to get more information about a certain product or service other than the usually hype we get from the stores, manufacturers or service providers.

Yup, consumer reviews are more realistic as they are based on actual use and experience.

For those who are new to website building and blogging

A friend, who’s a newbie to websites and blogging, asked for help regarding his plans of creating his own personal website. He’s an architect and wants to have a site where he can express his interests in design and music. He would like his site to be a venue for online ventures as well.

Just like any newbie to website building and development, he seemed intimidated just thinking about where and how to start. I explained a lot of things to him but told him it would be best to make his own blog first and learn the ropes in the process. I would be there to guide him of course.

We know there are so many free blogging platforms offered in the Internet nowadays. But I recommended to him to host his blog in his own domain. It simply is the best choice if you are serious about going into online ventures in the future as most free blogging sites are limited in features and customization.

A stress-free move

July 7, 2010

When I learned from my cutie sis that the owner of the flat they were renting notified them that their contract could not be renewed as the place was to be renovated, I could imagine the hassle they would experience when they would move out. Though it was relatively easier for them as most of the things/appliances and furniture, they used were being rented out to them, still they could have gotten the services of a moving company.

I remember our own time of transferring, when the family decided to move back home after being away from it for nearly two decades, to live in the city. Truly, moving out of one place to be relocated in another - the transfer of belongings from one place to another - could be stressful.
