When was the last time you flipped over the pages of a book, lost in a different world? For book lovers, they might reply with “yesterday” or “last weekend.” How about me? Hmmm… I haven’t been reading books lately, and I guess my answer would be “last month!” I sure hope I could go back to that habit of reading books, especially those inspiring and self-motivating kinds. For students, I know they need to deal with a lot of academic books. Business owners, managers and professionals also need to have books as practical guides and sources of reference in their chosen career.

Most of us have experienced those frustrating times when we need our important papers and they’re nowhere to be found! For instance, I lost one of my government cards before, and I searched high and low, but to no avail. I found it many months after, tucked under my bed. My little niece played with it and decided to put it there. Nowadays, it’s my savings account ATM card that’s missing and after three months of not finding it anywhere, I declare it as LOST item; no problem anyway, I will just visit the bank and have it replaced with another one.
Now I was talking about lost material items that can be replaced. How about those equally important virtual items in your computer: documents, files, photos, music, and videos? What if something happens to them; the computer’s hard drive crashed or the laptop was stolen? Would you risk such thing to happen to these virtual yet important items?

Designing the interiors of a home needs careful planning. Initially, you decide on a theme or style, then match it with appropriate color and visualize the types of furniture and decors you need to fit the overall look. Sometimes it can be tough to look for the right furniture design especially when there are few furniture shops and home depots within your area. We have experienced this while shopping for furniture for the condo units we handled few years ago.

When we did our furniture purchasing for the condo units, it took a lot of effort and time to do window-shopping and canvassing of different designs and prices. The result was a mix of customized and ready-made furniture to complete the look. We decided to have a customized wooden cabinet that doubled as a divider and shoe closet, since it would be impossible to find such type in the furniture shops. The dining sets and living room sets were purchased from different Our Home branches, and I would say it was quite tough looking for the right furniture set to fit our preferences.

I had an eye check-up recently for a pair of contact lenses. I have been wearing contacts since college and I feel more comfortable wearing them instead of eyeglasses. But I can say that my pair of eyeglasses has been helpful to me when one of my contacts broke into 3 pieces. Thankfully, it didn’t break while I was wearing it! It simply broke into pieces when I was cleaning it. So while I’m not using my contacts nowadays, my eyeglasses gave me the comfort of seeing the world with a clearer vision. I plan on replacing my glasses after my contacts will be finalized.

Our recent road trip to Cebu via the mountainous terrains of Don Salvador Benedicto municipality taught us some valuable lessons in road travel. While we did prepare our van days before; a technician even came here to troubleshoot and do some maintenance jobs on it, the van was not prepared for something else, the mysterious “magnetic hill” phenomenon somewhere along the mountains which seem to pull vehicles against its normal course going to San Carlos City. I guess that “force” had an effect on the van as it had difficulty climbing up the winding roads in that area where the magnetic field was strongest. Its engine was not prepared for such an opposite pull as we drove onwards to San Carlos City. It gave such pressure to the engine that when we arrived in Cebu, the van was already acting up, even stopping in the midst of the traffic.

My cutie sis may be a busy mom but she found some arts and crafts hobbies to entertain herself and they are actually great tools for bonding with her kids. From making accessories to kids’ crafts, the stuff she does encourage creativity and makes it a fun activity when kids are included. Simple hobbies such as these cost little, and they are some of life’s simple pleasures. For some persons though, they engage in hobbies that can cause quite a dent in savings, such as photography, numismatics or tinkering with radio scanners.

Recently I got an email from a friend in my Yahoo account. We’re just acquaintances, having known each other in graduate school, plus we haven’t communicated in ages, so I was a bit surprised to get an email from her asking for help. The seemingly formal style of letter writing plus the questionable content made me go hmmmm…. It was definitely a scam! I think the scammers got her password and wrote a phony letter on her behalf asking for money. I have received such scam emails before, so it wasn’t new. I just hope nobody in her address book got conned. Oh well, the Internet can be a dangerous place if you are not careful.

Recently my mom tried to contact somebody who was about to go on a trip to Europe. Good thing, she was able to call him just as he was about to depart at the airport. She tried calling him before that and the phone kept ringing. I told her, it could be that he already arrived in Europe and he was using a roaming account. At least she didn’t listen to me and kept calling him until her call got through. Well, we know how roaming charges not only affect the subscriber but also the one calling him, and sometimes the cost can be high.

My sis surprised me yesterday! She requested me to purchase an irresistible travel deal for a 3D/2N package to Palawan which already includes roundtrip airfare, airport transfers, hotel accommodation, breakfast plus a tour of the Puerto Princesa Underground River which is voted as one of the provisional New7Wonders of Nature. She plans to include this trip in their summer vacation here. I was about to log off that time, but I made the purchase because the deal would close in just few hours! Whew. Thank God, I was able to purchase the travel package. How about you, any travel plans for this summer?

If you’re always bringing your laptop with you, for work or whatever purpose it is, then be sure to guard it from thieves. I’ve seen a news video about a guy in a restaurant who placed his laptop bag on the floor while dining with a friend. It was just beside his feet and too bad he was so engrossed in his conversation with his friend that he was unaware of the guy who sat at the table beside them. The guy just pulled the laptop bag’s handle little by little as he let the bag slide towards him, he opened the zipper and took out the laptop, hurriedly put it inside his bag and walked away. Ugh. You can just imagine the reaction of the laptop owner upon seeing his bag fully opened and empty!

Last December, we had a road trip to another province and we brought along our trusty van. Among other important preparations for the long drive was getting the vehicle in top shape. Our trusted mechanic spent days working on the van, making sure it will be prepared for travel, considering the route which involves driving through rough and winding roads in the mountains. For long distance road trips, another important thing to consider is auto insurance. I’m sure a lot of car owners know this is required for travel, so that whatever happens, your vehicle is covered.

The first month of the year just breezed us by. I bet some travel enthusiasts have already made their holiday plans for this year. What about you? There’s just so much to visit and see around us, whether it is a nearby forest park or mountain resort or a faraway exotic destination. Personally, I have not made some travel plans for this year because I choose to prioritize and catch up on some piled-up tasks at work. Maybe when things will go a bit slow, then I can plan something. Of course, it also depends on my budget. Some things came up which somehow affected my finances.
Should my fairy godmother wave her magic wand, I would very much like to experience RV travel. It would be a dream-come-true for me, just camping and being with nature, experiencing the great outdoors on a road trip. (more…)
